In response to a drone strike causing accidental fires in the vicinity of Dubai’s international airport, airports throughout Dubai, including Dubai International Airport itself, grounded flight operations Monday morning. At the time of the incident, hundreds of people onboard were held in a holding pattern above other airports until clearance was granted for their return home. All departing and arriving passengers were instructed to remain at Heathrow for the moment due to the emergency situation. Emergency response crews responded quickly and worked to contain the fires created by the explosions that erupted as a result of the incident. Thankfully, no casualties were reported in connection to this incident.

Many airports in the UAE have significant flight and cargo volumes on a daily basis, and the majority of airport operations in that country will be overviewed by the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

This incident is not an isolated event. Multiple drone strikes have taken place around the world, with one of the most prominent being a drone attack on Saudi Arabian forces and their allied forces in Arhamah County, Yemen, by Iranian-backed Houthi rebels. The current conflict in Yemen is believed to be one of the main contributing factors to increased safety concerns regarding drone strikes globally.

Global Aviation Hub Faces Major Disruption

With over 90 million passengers each year, Dubai International Airport is one of the busiest airports in the world for international travel. After the temporary closure of Dubai International Airport, global flight schedules were drastically disrupted due to an extensive number of aircraft being rerouted to other airports and a number of other aircraft suffering delays and cancellations.

Following the attack, airlines, including Emirates, flydubai, and multiple international carriers, halted their operations for several hours after the attack. Some flights were routed to other airports such as Al Maktoum International Airport and other regional airports until the situation was resolved or stabilised.

In addition, the closure has impacted both air cargo operations and the operation of connecting flights, creating significant ripple effects throughout the international aviation routes linking Europe, Asia, and Africa to the UAE and the rest of the world through Dubai.

Airlines have cancelled and diverted a number of flights: multiple airlines announced flight cancellations and revisions to schedule after airport authorities cancelled their operations. Air India and Air India Express cancelled a number of flights to and from Dubai, while other airlines advised passengers to check with their airlines before proceeding to the airport.

As part of their efforts to effectively respond to the attack on the Emirates flight departing from Thiruvananthapuram to Dubai and which was suspended mid-air, authorities closed all airports for a temporary period of time, resulting in the aircraft returning safely to its original terminal in Thiruvananthapuram.

The number of air travel delays and cancellations throughout various countries are due to airlines having to modify schedules as well as help stranded passengers evacuate.

Linked to Wider Regional Conflict

The recent escalation in violence occurring throughout the entire region of the Middle East, specifically involving Iran’s aggression toward the US-Israel alliance has been responsible for this attack and many of the missile and drone attacks on Gulf nations, including many of their airports, ports and energy properties.

Since the escalation in this newest conflict began, there have been hundreds of missiles and drones fired throughout the region. This presents many countries with a need to increase their air defense and aviation security. The UAE has been able to shoot down many of these missiles; however there are other missiles that have reached their intended targets resulting in damage and/or other disruptions.

Flights Gradually Resume After Safety Checks

Once the blaze was put out and all necessary safety checks had been carried out, the airport regained some limited operations after a number of hours of suspension. After completing their investigations, the airlines have begun again to offer limited service, but are expected to experience delays and/or cancellations for an extended period of time.

Passengers travelling through those airports have been encouraged to listen for updates from their respective airlines or follow the authority’s advisories regarding travel plans as there will be ongoing schedule changes for the foreseeable future. The recent attack illustrates once again the vulnerability of large civilian infrastructure to international conflicts and how those attacks can impact air travel systems around the world.

The authorities in the UAE have stepped up their security and surveillance of major transport facilities while the investigation into the drone attack is completed.
