Residents of Bali were shocked to see a very large python swimming through a flooded neighborhood on a video recorded by several people. The video shows the enormous python swimming effortlessly in muddy, brown water that has flooded the street and sidewalk surfaces.
The flooding occurred after excessive rain caused the drainage system in several areas, leaving the homes and streets underwater.
Wildlife experts believe this snake is a reticulated python, which is found in Indonesia and prefers to live in forests, rivers, and rural land. Reticulated pythons are among the longest snakes in the world, and because they are strong swimmers, it is not surprising that a reticulated python can swim in flood waters without much effort.
Residents Urged to Stay Alert
The experts also say wildlife that has been displaced from their natural habitat will end up in many developed areas as they seek places with high elevation.
Local authorities have warned residents to be careful due to the potential for submerged debris and wildlife in flooded areas. Although reticulated pythons are typically not aggressive towards humans, they sometimes defend themselves if they feel threatened.
Officials reminded the public to contact animal control services rather than attempt to approach or capture large snakes on their own.

Flooding and Wildlife Encounters
Bali is a very attractive place to visit as a tourist, however, there are usually seasonal heavy rains that sometimes produce flash flooding. According to environmentalists, the increase in the population in urban areas encroaching on the natural habitat has contributed to the increased likelihood of such occurrences.
While cleanup efforts are underway, residents can be reminded of the strength — and unpredictability — of nature after extreme weather events by the sight of a large python swimming peacefully down a residential street.
