The Indian SUV segment is abuzz with anticipation with Mahindra & Mahindra all set to launch one of its most important products in many years. The domestic car manufacturer has not just publicly revealed the arrival of the Mahindra XUV 7XO, which is nothing but the long-anticipated facelifted iteration of legendary XUV700 as it will roll onto roads worldwide from January 5, 2026.

Not this time, and not just a lick-and-a-promise cosmetic spit shine. The shift from ‘XUV700’ to the new ‘XO’ puts across a significant step in Mahindra’s design story and technological capabilities. Pre-bookings are underway already at a token amount of ₹21,000 and there is everything you should know about this beast.

Futuristic design: Inspired by the ‘Born Electric’ DNA

Going by the teasers, the new-gen Mahindra Scorpio looks a lot edgier and a lot more futuristic than its previous avatar. The XUV 7XO has taken heavy cues from Mahindra’s upcoming electric range-based model, the XEV 9S.

Front Fascia: The major difference is in the lighting signature. This comes with the C-shape LED DRLs with new design grill and extra vertical chrome slats for a more meaner looking premium positioning.

Backside: The behind has been transformed with inverted L-shaped LED taillamps joined by a fashionable, full-width light bar. This “pixel style” illumination is a direct reference to contemporary EV design.

Aesthetics: Look for updated dual-tone alloy wheels, front and rear bumpers, and a choice of new exterior colors that’s said to expand to include a ‘Stealth Black’ as well as premium ‘Tan’.

Interior Revolution: The Triple-Screen Era

So as impressive as the exterior is, it’s when you open the door and step inside that you get the “wow.” With a tech-laden interior to compete with luxury brands, Mahindra has its set sights on resetting the premium SUV segment in India.

The Triple-Screen Dashboard

If the leaks are indeed true, then the interior of the XUV 7XO is set to get a massive triple-screen layout that spans across half of its dashboard.

This includes:

  • A digital driver’s instrument cluster.
  • A central 12.3-inch infotainment system

An optional 12.3-inch front passenger’s screen to stream entertainment or control the navigation without disrupting the driver Dueling Stuns and onlaid dials in one of two complete designs; enough storage for small payloads prolly worth checking out!

Powered Boss Mode & Rear Comfort

Mahindra has launched the Electric Boss Mode to cater for those who don’t want to do the driving. Just press a button and the seat of the front co-driver slides forward allowing for legroom you might expect from a limousine. Moreover, the SUV should come with ventilated second-row seats, and a sliding middle row to get better flexibility.

In-Car Theatre & Connectivity

The 7XO comes powered by the new Adrenox+ software and adds an `In-Car Theatre mode’ with BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) support. Passengers can then pair their tablets or smart phones directly to the system for an uninterrupted entertainment experience.

Cutting-Edge Safety and Performance

Safety has been an aspect which Mahindra has never compromised and the XUV 7XO continues to be at the forefront. The most gleefully helpful addition included in the design is that 540-degree camera system, which offers a “transparent hood” view that lets drivers see precisely what’s underneath their car — making it an off-roading and tight urban parking lifesaver.

The Level 2 ADAS features updated graphics on the instrument cluster and has now been fine-tuned for Indian roads.

Under the Hood: Proven Power

Even after the huge tech updates, Mahindra is keeping its powertrain choices tried and tested:

2.0 litre mStallion Turbo-Petrol: Juiced up with 200 PS punch and 380 Nm power.

2.2-litre mHawk Diesel: Generating a peak output of 185 PS and a thumping 450 Nm of torque.

Transmission: Both engines will be offered with a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed torque converter automatic. The diesel RXL and RZ will also be available with All-Wheel Drive (AWD).

Expected Price and Variants

The XUV 7XO should carry over a similar trim strategy as the current model (MX, AX5, AX7 and AX7L) plus add an all-new ultra premium grade in the form of the AX9L for packaging in all of its high-tech goodies.

The Verdict: A New Benchmark?

Prior to the launch of XUV 7XO, it was pretty clear that Mahindra is gunning for the stronghold of Tata Safari, MG Hector Plus and Hyundai Alcazar. The 7XO offers a happy medium for buyers looking to the future when it comes to tech, but who aren’t ready to make the full leap to an EV yet by blending “Born electric” styling with high-performance internal combustion engines.

With the launch scheduled for January 5, it looks like XUV 7XO is set to take over the mid-size SUV segment once again.
