Mamata Banerjee, the Chief Minister of West Bengal, was very upset at a Trinamool Congress MLA when he proposed to construct a replica of Babri Masjid in the state- a proposal which immediately caused political tremors and internal party unrest.
The comments, which were made in a state affair, were immediately pounced on by the opposition parties, although Mamta Banerjee stepped in and reminded her lawmakers in the party not to make sensitive religious statements.

The Controversial Proposal That Sparked Tension
The controversy arose when a TMC MLA, at a local meeting, publicly suggested constructing a building similar to the Babri Masjid, arguing that this would acknowledge history and attract visitors. This was widely shared on social media and drew some harsh responses.
The MLA’s comments were very timely, as the topic of the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya and other communal matters is still highly charged in political circles. When it was decided to recreate the Babri Mosque, which had been torn down in 1992, causing tensions in the country, this was an added fire fuel.

Mamata Banerjee Issues Stern Reprimand
TMC sources said that Mamata Banerjee was highly irate regarding the comments made by the MLA, and she had advised the party leaders to avoid uttering anything that would cause any kind of disturbance in the communal harmony. Insiders claim that Banerjee informed her camp that the political culture of West Bengal is founded on the idea of inclusivity and that any irresponsible comments might weaken years of peacebuilding.
The Chief Minister is quoted as saying that the state is getting into a politically sensitive season, and any inflammatory remarks would provide opposition parties with unwarranted fuel.
Opposition Pounces on Political Opportunity
The BJP and the other opposition forces did not take long to criticise the remarks of the MLA, calling on the TMC to be inciting religious feelings with political interests in mind. According to BJP spokespersons, the very fact that they have floated such a notion is an indication of a vote-bank mentality, and they asked the Chief Minister to clarify the party’s position.
The left parties also added their voices to the matter, stating that these token proposals were just distracting the main business of governance, such as unemployment, inflation, and the well-being of the people.
TMC Attempts Damage Control
After the backlash, Trinamool’s top leaders scampered to do damage control. They made it clear that the remarks made by the MLA were personal opinions and not those that were supported by the party. Privately, some of the leaders said that disciplinary action can be employed should similar incidents recur.
Communal peace is a high priority for the TMC government, considering that the history of West Bengal is full of political rivalries that have been mixed with issues of identity. Banerjee has on numerous occasions indicated that she would never permit partisan politics to ruin the state.
A Reminder of Political Sensitivities Ahead of Elections
The episode highlights how sensitive communal issues are in the politics of India. As various states prepare to hold elections, West Bengal has always been a politically hostile ground, and parties are afraid of the stories that can shape people.
Mamata Banerjee seems to be sending a signal to the TMC that it will not get involved in unnecessary controversies but instead portray a message of social harmony by rebuking her MLA quickly and efficiently. The disciplinary actions of MLA have yet to be seen, but in the meantime, the party is concerned that the problem does not escalate.
