Tata Motors has officially shown off the new Tata Punch, which will go on sale on January 13, 2026. This is the first big update for the ICE-powered Punch since it came out in 2021. It includes changes to the powertrains, the way the outside looks, and the features inside.

Updated design based on the Punch.ev

The 2026 Tata Punch makeover has a more modern look that is based on the Punch.ev and Tata’s newest SUVs. The front of the microSUV has a thinner grille and a totally redesigned bumper with chunky black cladding, a silver-accented air dam, and air curtains that look like they work.

Adding vertically stacked LED headlights, like on the Punch EV, is a big change to the way it looks. But the ICE Punch update doesn’t have a full-width LED light bar. Instead, it has a blacked-out unit with sleek LED daytime running lights that make it stand out. Front-mounted camera in the hood and bulges under the ORVMs highly suggest the addition of a 360-degree surround-view camera system, which could be the first of its kind in the class.

From the side, the shape doesn’t change much, but the update adds new metal wheel styles, black ORVMs, and new colour choices for the outside, such as a lighter blue shade that was shown in official images.

The Punch update adds a new bumper design and paired LED taillights inside a black trim piece to the back. The old taillights with three arrow shapes have been changed, and the Tata logo has been updated to match the current design language used by the brand on cars like the Altroz and Harrier.

Changes and additions to the inside

Even though the ads focus on the outside, changes to the inside should be just as important. When the Punch gets a new look, it will have Tata’s new black leather steering wheel with a lit Tata logo. The structure of the panel and the air vents are mostly the same. The only difference is that the AC settings are now touch-based.

A bigger tablet entertainment system, a fully digital instrument panel, wifi Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, and better connected-car technology are some of the new features. The Punch could get even more high-end by adding more comfort and ease features to higher versions.

The turbo-petrol engine is finally here to stay

Adding a turbo-petrol engine and a 6-speed manual gearbox to the Punch is the biggest change for the better. It’s possible that Tata Motors will use the engine in other models, like the Altroz Racer and Nexon, where it makes about 120bhp and 170Nm of power. This would be a big step up from the Punch’s standard 1.2-liter naturally aspirated gas engine, which makes 88bhp and 115Nm.

When paired with a 6-speed manual gearbox, the turbo-petrol Punch should have better highway performance and faster acceleration, which was one of the main complaints about the old model. The extra power should also work better with the Punch’s heavy curb weight and SUV-like shape.

The 1.2-liter NA gasoline engine and the CNG version with Tata’s twin-cylinder technology will both stay in the range. For the turbo-petrol, there will be a 6-speed manual gearbox choice. Lower trims will still have the 5-speed manual and AMT gearbox options, but the CNG will only have the manual gearbox option. With its focus on speed, the turbo-petrol version is likely to be the most powerful of the Punch models.

A better competitor for the micro-SUV

With a new turbo-petrol engine and 6-speed manual gearbox, along with updated looks and more features, the new Tata Punch facelift will better match its tough image with better performance on the road. The updated Punch, which is one of Tata Motors’ best-selling models, will likely play a big part in keeping the brand going strong in the very competitive micro-SUV market when it goes on sale in January 2026.
