As it becomes warm in the winter of 2026, City’s blue side are already casting an eye to a summer of revolution. With the January transfer window full of short term solutions, it is understood Manchester City and Pep Guardiola are playing for the long term. However, another name is now bouncing around the halls of their towering Etihad Stadium, and it belongs to Nottingham Forest wonderkid Elliot Anderson – who has quickly gone from hot prospect to one of the most in-demand midfielders on the continent.

The rise of the 23-year-old at the City Ground has been nothing short of meteoric. Gradually now the young potential blossomed and began to flower into the Premier League heavyweight who would go on to win six England caps, while consistently hitting a place in the world’s top clubs’ scouting reports.

A High-Stakes Battle: The Manchester Derby on the Market

Going after Anderson is about more than just tactics for Manchester City, it’s a front line assault on their neighbours across the city. Manchester United have tracked the midfielder for some time, considering him to be the foundation of their own “engine room” rebuild. However reports in early January indicate that City have improbably managed to act with trademark swiftness, entering into preliminary discussions with the player’s camp.

The Old Trafford “spooked” response is tangible. Given City’s brand of winning, as well as the appeal of learning under Guardiola there will be a lot to move past for any club in an eventual bidding war. For Anderson, the chance to sign for a side that consistently battles for Champions League honours is a huge attraction, and could give City an advantage over a United team going through something of a transitional period.

The Successor to Rodri

What’s so special about a mid-table player that has Pep Guardiola drooling like an infant on hallucinogens? And the key here is Anderson’s versatility. City’s recruitment staff, spearheaded by the former player Hugo Viana, see him as the perfect hybrid midfield plotter. Able to play as a deep-lying No. 6 or a box-to-box type, Anderson has the physical tools and technical ability that typify modern City player.

With legend Rodri still managing the prolonged effects of his 2024-25 ACL injury, and Mateo Kovačić entering the twilight of his top-level career, City are crying out for a new face in the pivot. His capacity to avoid pressure, control the tempo of a game and surge forward with the ball makes him a “no-brainer” for a system that relies on total fluidity.

The £100 Million Price Tag

It’s not going to come cheap, locking up Anderson. Owner Evangelos Marinakis knows he holds a jewel in his hands. Early signs suggest Forest will hold out for a fee that is significantly higher than the £80m-£100m bracket which some have valued him at or even further if Anderson excels while on international duty with England in this summer’s World Cup.

And City have a record of being ready to walk away from deals if the “valuation gap“ is not narrowed – as they did with Declan Rice years ago. But inside the Etihad, it is believed that Anderson may be a once-in-a-generation player who is simply “too good to ignore”.

And in the event that negotiations stall with Forest, City have already lined up another option: Brazilian sensation Ederson of Atalanta. Ederson may be the cheaper option at around €40 million but Anderson is still “Priority A” for a club which prides itself of always signing the best young Brazilian talent available.

A Summer of Rebuilding

The approach toward Anderson forms part of a more widespread “youth injection” at Manchester City. Should he follow Rayan Cherki and Tijjani Reijnders in through the door this summer, Anderson’s arrival would mean a complete overhaul of what was until recently a central department heavily reliant on the ageing legs of Kevin De Bruyne and İlkay Gündoğan.

With the season set to end, keep an eye out for increased noise around this transfer. With Manchester City having already agreed a deal for Bournemouth’s Antoine Semenyo and casting an eye over Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi, the 2026 summer transfer window is on course to be one of the most fevered in its history. It is a destination which continues to be regarded by Elliot Anderson, in the event City can negotiate their way through all the financial stunts that Forest are after pulling.
