Donald Trump praised Taranjit Singh Sandhu’s work to improve relations between the US and India and thanked him for his new job as Lieutenant Governor of Delhi. Sandhu is an experienced official who has held many jobs, including being India’s ambassador to the US from 2020 to 2024.

What does Taranjit Sandhu do?

In 1988, Taranjit Sandhu became an ambassador and began working for the Indian Foreign Service. In the beginning of his career, he worked as a Third Secretary (Political) and Second Secretary (Commercial) in the former Soviet Union, from 1990 to 1992. After the fall of the Soviet Union, he helped set up the Indian Embassy in Ukraine. From 1992 to 1994, he was in charge of the Political and Administrative Wings in Kiev.

Sandhu went to The Lawrence School, Sanawar, after being born on January 23, 1963, into a family of educators. His undergraduate degree was in history with honours from St. Stephen’s College, Delhi. He then went on to get a master’s degree in international relations from Jawaharlal Nehru University.

But he had worked at the Indian Mission twice before that. From July 2013 to January 2017, he was Deputy Chief of Mission. From 1997 to 2000, he was First Secretary (Political), which meant he dealt with the US Congress. From July 2005 to February 2009, he was also in charge of India’s permanent mission to the UN in New York.

From January 2017 to January 2020, Sandhu was the High Commissioner of India to Sri Lanka. This was his job before it. Before that, from December 2000 to September 2004, he was in charge of the political wing in Colombo.

From September 2011 to July 2013, Sandhu was the Indian Consul General in Frankfurt. He worked for the Ministry of External Affairs as Joint Secretary (United Nations) from March 2009 to August 2011 and as Joint Secretary (Administration) in charge of the Human Resource Division. From December 1995 to March 1997, he was Officer on Special Duty (Press Relations), which meant that he was in charge of making deals with foreign media in India.

Sandhu went into politics after leaving the Indian Foreign Service. The Bharatiya Janata Party put him forward as a candidate for the Amritsar Lok Sabha seat in 2024, but he did not win the seat.

The man is married to Reenat Sandhu, who is also a career official.
