With the new WhatsApp test for Android, users can now see status changes right at the top of the Chats tab. With this feature, users can quickly see the latest changes without having to switch to a different area. Everything stays in the main chat screen.
At the top of the Chats tab, WhatsApp looks at status changes
In the post about the update to WhatsApp beta for Android 2.26.11.2, we talked about a new feature that puts status changes at the top of the Chats tab. The goal of this function is to speed up the process of seeing status changes. Users would not have to open the changes tab to see the most current status changes. Instead, they could see them right in the Chats screen. In the Chats tab, status changes will be shown more clearly, and the style will move them closer to the main chat list.
Beta testing in the beginning and continuing rollout
In our last post, we talked about this feature in more depth, but it was still being worked on. Now, WhatsApp is trying with a small group of Android beta users where status changes should go in the Chats tab. With this update, some beta testers can see progress changes in the chat list in a smaller format. We found out that WhatsApp is putting out a feature that shows status changes at the top of the Chats tab after the latest WhatsApp beta for Android 2.26.17.1 update came out and was available on the Google Play Store.
How to change your state in the chat list
The picture shows a function that lets people see status changes right in the chat list. Keep in mind that you could already see progress changes in the Chats tab. Users could only see information from people they are currently chatting with, though. This means that users need to open the messages tab to see all of their friends’ status messages in one place. With the most recent update, WhatsApp now puts status changes in the app bar at the top. Users can now see new state changes as soon as they open the app.

Tray that can hold more status updates in the Chats tab
Up to three friends who have recently shared a status update are shown in the top app bar by WhatsApp. Users can scroll down the screen to see all of their friends’ status changes. This way, users can see more than just the three things in the app bar at the top. This area also has information from friends that have been stored and from people that you are not currently talking to. Like Instagram, the layout puts stories at the top of the feed, which is similar to how the app looks. Now that this has been changed, status changes are right at the top of the chat list, so you can see them without having to go to the changes tab. Also, the “WhatsApp” name in the upper left corner is hidden when status updates are visible, but it shows up when the user moves down the screen.
The Updates tab still has a full state summary
You can still get status reports in the reports tab. This tab is where WhatsApp shows status changes with tiny previews that make them easy to see. The Chats tab, on the other hand, shows the same changes in a smaller format. The interface has been reduced and shrunk down in this case so that it takes up less room and fits in better with the chat list. This makes the Chats tab look lighter, but it still shows who has shared a new status update. Even in the Chats tab, status changes are shown in a certain order based on how often they are viewed and interacted with. Users should see this as a trial test in the beta version, even though it may not seem necessary right now.

It looks like status reports in the Chats bar are just a test
It looks like putting status updates in the top app bar is more of an experiment than a final change that all users will see. The goal seems to be for WhatsApp to see how users interact with the function in ‘real life’. By trying it on a small group of people first, WhatsApp can get feedback on whether users like the new setting or find it annoying. Since this is still a trial rollout, there won’t be any ads between status updates when you look at them in the new tray in the Chats tab.
Status reports will be added to the chat list slowly over time
Some beta testers who get the latest WhatsApp beta for Android update from the Google Play Store can use the feature that shows status changes in the top app bar. Keep in mind that not all people can use this function at this time. This feature is being added to WhatsApp slowly, so at first, it may not be possible to use it much. More users may see status changes at the top of the chat list over the next few weeks, but this will still depend on the results of different tests.
