The number of people giving up their Indian citizenship has been steadily going up over the past few years. Government records show that since 2022, more than two lakh Indians have given up their citizenship every year. This rising trend has led to discussions about travel, chances abroad and how Indians’ goals are changing.

Why are indians giving up their citizenship

Numbers Have Been Rising Sharply in Recent Years

Numbers shown in Parliament show that almost a million Indians have given up their citizenship in the last five years. The number of people has been rising very quickly since 2022, when it passed two lakh per year. More than 2.06 lakh people gave up their Indian citizenship in 2024 alone.

The number of cases was lower during the pandemic years. In 2020, about 85,000 people gave up their citizenship. In 2021, 1.63 lakh people did the same. As travel restrictions were lifted and new ways to become a citizen and live in a foreign country for a long time were made available, the jump after that time shows that people were able to move around the world again.

In the longer term, more than 20 lakh Indians have given up their citizenship since 2011, with almost half of them doing so in the last five years. This shows that the problem isn’t just affecting a small group of people.

Government Says Citizenship Choice Is Personal

In response to worries raised in Parliament, the Ministry of External Affairs said that giving up Indian citizenship is a personal choice. The government says that people take these kinds of steps based on their family needs, job goals, and long-term plans.

The ministry also made it clear that the Indian community living abroad is valued by the government and seen as a valuable gift to the world. Indians living outside of India still help their home country by investing, doing business, sending money back, and sharing what they know. The government said that its major goal is still to improve ties with the Indian community, not to stop people from leaving the country.

No Dual Citizenship Plays a Major Role

India’s stance on dual citizenship is a big reason why so many people give up their citizenship. Under Indian law, a person can’t be a citizen of two countries at the same time. Anyone who willingly becomes a citizen of another country must give up their Indian status.

This is a real problem for Indians who live abroad for long stretches of time. In many countries, only full citizens can get perks like the right to vote, social security, health care, and job stability. People who have moved to another country and plan to stay often choose to become citizens of that country to stay safe and follow the law.

India does offer the Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) title, but it does not give full citizenship rights. This makes a lot of long-term workers take the last step of giving up their migration status.

Changing Goals and Chances Around the World

Many Indians are leaving the country for better job opportunities, higher schooling, safer economies, and better quality of life. Families and skilled workers are drawn to countries with good public services, cleaner surroundings, and better immigration policies.

Some experts also say that people leave India for other countries because of rising competition, unequal incomes, and a lot of work stress. India is still one of the best places to grow, but many people would rather have systems that are safe and predictable over the long run.

At the same time, the growing number of people giving up their citizenship has raised worries about brain drain, since many of those going are workers with a lot of education.

The fact that more and more Indians are giving up their citizenship says that the problem will stay a national one. Politicians, lawmakers and experts are all keeping a close eye on the trend to see what effects it will have in the long run.

Migration is a sign of personal desire and global chance. For India, the task will be to make it easier for bright people to stay, come back, or stay linked, no matter where they live.
