CII Suggests Air Taxi Corridor to Slash Delhi-NCR Travel Time

A new transport vision could soon take shape above the busy roads of the National Capital Region (NCR), as the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) has proposed an innovative air taxi corridor that would link Gurugram, Connaught Place (CP) and the upcoming Noida International Airport at Jewar. The idea goal to dramatically cut travel time, ease traffic congestion and introduce advanced aerial mobility to one of India’s most densely populated regions.

The story says that the suggested route would be driven by electric vertical take off and landing (eVTOL) planes, which are also known as air taxis because they can fly short distances fast, skipping ground traffic and giving passengers an alternative to cars and metro trains that saves them time. For people who drive every day and spend hours stuck in traffic, this kind of air travel could make getting around cities a lot easier.

Travel Times Could Shrink from Hours to Minutes

The CII study points out that heavy congestion on roadways in the Delhi-NCR area makes even short distances time-consuming to travel by car or taxi. An air taxi service could change that.

For example, Gurugram and Connaught Place are about 27 to 30 km apart in a straight line, but it can take well over an hour to get there during rush hour. With a dedicated air route and eVTOL service, this trip could be done in just a few minutes, making daily travel and commuting a lot easier.

Get from Connaught Place to the Noida International Airport faster by taking an air cab. The distance is more than 100 km and it usually takes two to three hours to drive there. There could be more trouble getting to key transportation hubs in and around the national capital if this happens.

The proposal also emphasises that an aerial route could avoid sensitive and restricted central airspace by following planned detours over permissible corridors, ensuring both compliance and safety.

Next-Gen Urban Transport — What It Means

The air taxi route is one of a group of options called Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) that aims to add new, better ways to get around by air to city infrastructure. With zero emission electric aircraft, quieter operations and potential vertiport take-off and landing pads on rooftops of tall buildings or designated hubs, AAM supporters argue this could be a sustainable alternative for congested metros.

CII’s proposal isn’t just about cutting commute times. It also highlights how such technologies could serve emergency medical services, like fast transport between hospitals or rapid organ transfer functions that are difficult to achieve quickly through road travel in busy city conditions.

Urban planners and business leaders say that the roofs of hospitals, tech parks and office towers could be turned into vertiports where air cars could land and take off. This could reduce the need to buy expensive land and make air travel more compatible with the skyline as it is now.

Next Steps in Regulation and Practice

Transportation experts and politicians are interested in the idea, but flight officials need to give their approval first. This includes staying within the limited airspace around major airports and government zones and making sure that eVTOL planes meet safety and electricity standards.

Authorities are already working on frameworks to introduce these new modes of transport  including laying down rules for vertiports and airspace management  as part of broader efforts to modernise India’s urban mobility landscape by the mid-2020s.

Experts in the field think that the rollout could happen in stages, starting with test lines like the Gurugram-CP-Jewar road and then moving on to other high-demand areas in the NCR.

The air cab route could be a big step forward in how people move in and out of Delhi if it comes true. Aerial services like these could revolutionize how people move around cities in the future by cutting down on long, tiring trips and making it faster to get to airports and other important hubs.
