The Indian professionals with H-1B visas have been stranded in India, with dozens of them returning to renew their work permits after travelling to India, as the United States consulates continue to slow down on getting them processed, changing appointment times and tightening their verification standards, after they had come to India.

The scenario has provoked increasing anxiety among the Indian technology community and created the concern of employment stability, immigration status and loss of money.

Employees Not able to resume American jobs

Some H-1B were even in technology, healthcare and finance fields, and the ones who were back home had thought of it as routine. Rather, most of them had their visa reviews postponed, and their appointments rearranged without any indication and had to stay in India, weeks, in some cases, months.

There are several reports of being placed under administrative processing, which is usually an extra step requiring additional documentation or security verification. Back in the U.S., employers are having issues with staffing shortages and project interruptions; some employees are threatening to lose their jobs unless they are back to work soon.

Consulates Are Stretched to Limits As Need Grows

The number of visa stamping applications has dramatically increased after the pandemic, and the demand on appointments in the consulates in Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Hyderabad as well as Kolkata has increased. The earliest slots available, according to applicants, are as early as 2026, which makes many seek slots in the neighbouring countries, which is an expensive and unpredictable path.

Even though the U.S. authorities have admitted to processing backlog, there is no official announcement that covers the most recent delays or provides some relief to the trapped employees.

Lives In Limbo, Change Major Financial Strain

The long wait has imposed a tremendous financial burden on the professionals who still pay rent and other expenses in the U.S., yet they live with family or in temporary accommodation in India. Parents of school-going children have been affected by schooling disruptions, and most are worried about losing long-term residency avenues because they are uncertain about their employment.

According to immigration experts, the delays seem to affect especially H-1B visa holders already in the green card queue, as many of them have spent more than a decade in the U.S.

Increasing Demand To Interfere With Policies

The industry lobby groups and the immigration lobby are increasing calls to the two governments to ease the process and put in place measures to protect the foreign workers who are based in the U.S. but are caught in the red tape. The risk of losing talent has also been identified by U.S. employers, who have indicated that H-1B workers are a vital contributor to high-tech and research areas.

In the meantime, there are still thousands of applicants logging into online portals every day, hoping that their cases will be made. Having no idea when the processing will even out, the visa holders are stalled in an unforeseen and distressing immigration bottleneck with no idea how their futures will turn out, their employment suspended and their travel plans in a deep freeze.
