A new momentum is observed when it comes to the economic partnership that India holds with Canada. Union Minister Piyush Goyal meets Ontario Minister Victor Fedeli in New Delhi. Reports reveal that there is a high possibility that India will take up this opportunity in the segment of clean energy and critical minerals. Also, both nations are urging to diversify their supply chain profiles to build a strong and secure technology ecosystem.
Our trade minister, Piyush Goyal, has appreciated the country’s strength in the subject of artificial intelligence, machine learning, quantum computing, and even in the next-generation data centres. Definitely, India is taking up this relationship strategically with Canada.

A high-ambition Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) seems to be on the way as both governments are aiming to fast-track the whole trade process. Also, it seems that they would be trying to double the trade provision by the year 2030. PM Narendra Modi and Canadian PM Mark Carney, too, agreed on the trade talks during the G7 Summit in June to revive the negotiations all over again. Even foreign affairs minister Anita Anand and trade minister Maninder Sidhu have scheduled a meeting in October and November to discuss the same. This renewed engagement is being built on trust for a better future.
A bond built on mutual trust and democratic values
Goyal, that this India-Canada bond is going to be built on mutual trust and democratic values. Also, there is going to be a bilateral engagement in terms of investment in trade. India’s expansion in the power grid sector and clean energy capacity by the year 2030 is going to offer a round-the-clock competitive rate to the country globally.
It is also about strengthening the financial links between the two nations. This is evident from the growing presence of Canadian companies in the fields of technology, renewables and infrastructure. Of course, this has raised our expectations among multiple industries as both economies are aiming to stabilize their ties as well as rebuild the lost confidence all over again.
Earlier, Indian agents were accused of involvement in the killing of a Khalistani separatist by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. This has deteriorated the nation’s bond back during 2023. However, India had rejected the allegation, and a lot of other things had followed since then. Also, visas were suspended, and trade ties were on hold.
This new ray of hope seems to bring significant changes to the economies of both Canada and India in fields of nuclear energy, supply chain, critical minerals, aerospace parts and agricultural products.
After such massive turbulence, it is now final that India and Canada will resume the FTA (free trade agreement) in a positive approach. Ajay Sahai, director general, Federation of Indian Export Organisations (FIEO), stated that the market access will now be made faster for Indian citizens in different sectors such as engineering goods and textiles. Also, the lower tariffs will unlock real opportunities for the people in the pharma and agricultural goods sectors. Lastly, reports revealed that the India-Canada exports have risen in the FY 2025, and imports have fallen a bit this year in comparison to FY 2024.
