India’s defense exports have reached all time highs a year after Operation Sindoor, thanks to combat proven homegrown weapons. India is immediately becoming a major producer of modern defense technology worldwide. In FY2025 to 26, the country received new orders worth Rs 24,000 crore and exported goods worth Rs 38,424 crore.

On Thursday (May 7, 2026) India will mark the first anniversary of Operation Sindoor

The 96 hour battle in May of last year was a technical success that will go down in military history. However, the operation’s most lasting memory is its devastating effect on the Indian economy.

India is now one of the biggest defense exporters in the world, thanks to the battle proven qualities of its own weapons during the conflict. This has led to an unprecedented Rs 24,000 crore in new export orders, putting India in the top tier of defense exporters worldwide.

The Ministry of Defence (MoD) said in April 2026 that India’s overall defense exports for the 2025–26 fiscal year hit an all time high of Rs 38,424 crore $4.6 billion.

This number is a huge 62.6% increase from the previous fiscal year. This rise is mostly due to the fact that local systems are proven to be effective and reliable when they are under fire.

The change in Indian defense technology from a budget friendly alternative to a strategic necessity is a big step forward for the Self Reliant India plan.

How Operation Sindoor proved that tech Made in India was real

Before May 2025, governments around the world were often skeptical of India’s homegrown defense systems. Global buyers often thought that local systems were either always being worked on or had never been tried in the harsh conditions of high intensity electronic warfare.

Within a 96hour window Operation Sindoor broke these ideas

The precise strikes on May 7, 2025, which were aimed at the airbases at Nur Khan and Rahimyar Khan, showed what the Air Launched BrahMos missile could do in real life.

The fact that it could get through complex air defenses and launch precise attacks made it the perfect marketing tool for a defense show.

India also showed how good it was at using the sensor to shooter  link during the war. During the Suppression of Enemy Air Defences activities, Indian made hovering missiles, which are sometimes called kamikaze drones, were able to destroy enemy radar stations in an extremely crowded electronic environment.

As these methods worked so well they got a lot of requests and contracts

Out of the Rs 24,000 crore in new export orders that came in between July 2025 and March 2026, four were the greatest:

The BrahMos missile system was long seen as the crown jewel of Indian defense. Its ability to get around Chinese made HQ 9 air defense systems during the operation made it a must have for Southeast Asian and West Asian countries facing similar risks in the area.

Akash air defense system (New Generation)

The Akash NG had a very important night on May 9th and 10th, 2025. Over 90% of subsonic cruise missiles and attacks by groups of drones were blocked by the system, which is a huge success. So, by the beginning of this year, five countries in Africa and South America had signed contracts to buy the system, citing its portability and ability to attack multiple targets at the same time.

Indigenous lingering weapons: Operation Sindoor was the first large scale use of silent killers in India. As a result of their sharp accuracy and ability to find high value targets, ASEAN and Eastern European countries placed large orders with them.

Netra AEW&C (Airborne Early Warning and Control): The Netra platform managed a huge 114 aircraft battle as the Eye in the Sky. The world had more faith in India’s electronic warfare (EW) and radar systems because they were resistant to enemy jamming.

What effect the rise has had on the Indian economy

This export boom has effects on a lot of different types of money, not just the Ministry of Defense’s bank sheet. The rise to Rs 38,424 crore has given the Indian industrial sector a new lease on life.

The private sector has become the most important force for the first time. In FY2026, it made up 45.16 percent Rs 17,352 crore, of all exports. This is a gain of 54% year over year for private businesses, showing that the government and private businesses work well together.

This growth in industry has had a real effect on the job market. The Ministry of Defense (MoD) says that the rise in exports has helped support about 1.5 lakh direct and secondary jobs in the defense production sector.

How getting past fundamental problems is important for the future

Even though everyone is excited about the first anniversary of Operation Sindoor, experts in the field say that there are still some underlying problems that need to be fixed.

High end technologies, like jet engines and advanced sensors, are still mostly brought in from other countries. Also, the level of R&D is not as high as it is in countries like the US or China, which are world leaders.

To fix these problems, the business world and universities will need to work together more and invest more in new tools that will change things.

But the trend can’t be argued with

Additionally, the environment is getting stronger thanks to the draft DAP 2026 and the ongoing success of the iDEX program (Innovations for Defence Excellence).

As we look ahead to the goals for 2029, the record breaking numbers from the beginning of 2026 show that this country has successfully turned its economic promise into a weapon.
