As India welcomes the year 2026, many new rules and laws have taken effect, affecting our daily lives and earnings. Some of these changes affect things people need, such as cooking gas, banks, transportation, and taxes. Others affect investments, wages, and government benefits.

Today, a lot of things have changed. Here are some of the most important ones: prices for LPG and adding your PAN and Aadhaar, cab services, buying a car, tax rules, and banking rules.

  1. Your PAN card might fail to work

December 31 was the last day to connect Aadhaar to PAN. Your PAN card may not work after January 1 if you haven’t tied it to your Aadhaar number.

If your PAN is not real, it will be hard to file your taxes, claim a return, open a bank account, get a loan, and use government programs. For PANs provided with Aadhaar information before October 1, 2024, this rule applies.

  1. The Bharat Taxi app will be available by the end of January.

The government-backed Bharat Taxi app will soon be available in the national capital and other towns. When it launches at the end of January, the app from the Sahakar Taxi Cooperative will offer safe, reliable, and affordable rides. It is being marketed as an Indian option to Ola and Uber, and it was made to meet the needs of Indian workers.

  1. The price of commercial LPG cylinders went up, and the ATF rate went down.

The price of a business LPG cylinder has gone up by Rs 111 as of today. This is the biggest price increase since June 2025. The price of a household LPG cylinder has stayed the same.

In Delhi, the price of aviation turbine fuel (ATF), also known as jet fuel, dropped by 7.3%, or Rs 7,353.75 per kilolitre, to Rs 92,323.02 per kilolitre. Price hikes happened three times a month before the drop. Every month on the first, oil marketing companies change the prices of LPG and fuel.

  1. The new income tax law’s road map starts

The new Income Tax Act doesn’t start until today, but in January, the government will send out the new ITR forms and rules. These will take effect on April 1, 2026 (FY 2026–27), replacing the Income Tax Act of 1961. The new system offers easier-to-understand forms, better descriptions of tax years, and faster processes.

  1. Set to start: the 8th Pay Commission

There was no more 7th Pay Commission after December 31, 2021. The 8th Pay Commission should go into effect on January 1.

The new system for pay estimates for central government workers and pensioners starts today. Pay raises and higher pensions may take some time to show up.

  1. It costs more to buy a car

Are you going to buy a car in 2026? Prices are going up up to 3% at a number of brands, such as Nissan, BMW, MG Motor, Renault, and Ather Energy. Be ready to pay more. The prices of new cars will go up from today because Tata Motors and Honda have also said they will raise prices.

  1. PM Farmer rules change in Kisan

To get benefits from the PM Kisan Yojana, farmers in states like Uttar Pradesh will now need a unique farmer ID. Also, the PM Kisan field Insurance Scheme will now cover field damage caused by wild animals as long as the losses are reported within 72 hours.

  1. New rules for loans, UPI, fixed deposits, and SIM cards

There are tighter rules for UPI transfers and SIM card verification starting today in order to stop online scams in banking and digital payments. At the same time, banks like SBI, HDFC Bank, and PNB have lowered loan interest rates, which is good news for people who are borrowing money.

  1. Exports to Australia with no tariffs

As of today, India can send any goods to Australia without having to pay any taxes. Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal announced the move, which marks three years of the trade agreement between India and Australia. It means that all Indian goods coming into Australia will not have to pay any import tax.
