A political uproar has broken out in Karnataka after the state Congress president DK Shivakumar, unleashed on a former Punjab MLA (Navjot Kaur Sidhu) by telling her to get admitted to a mental hospital after she said she had paid 500 crores to obtain medical treatment as she fought cancer.

The ex-Congresswoman, who is also the wife of former cricketer and Congress leader, Navjot Singh Sidhu, had previously claimed that her diagnosis and treatment of cancer involved heavy financial outlay in the hundreds of crores range, which was highly doubted and spread across social media.

Shivakumar Hits Back at Remarks

In an interview with the press, Shivakumar was very critical of her declaration. He said she would have to be put in a mental hospital. “No treatment costs ₹500 crore. She should check her mind.”

The Karnataka leader and also chief of the state unit of the Congress has claimed that this was irresponsible, particularly when it comes from the mouth of a former representative of the people, and that misinformation may mislead the people about the cost of healthcare.

Congress Distances Itself

The congress leaders tried to dissociate the party from both points of controversy and one of the leaders told his part that the statements were regrettable.

Officially, the party has not reacted, but the reaction was made after the party workers pointed to the videos that were spreading online.

Navjot Kaur Sidhu has not reacted to the remarks of Karnataka Deputy CM.

Video Sparks Debate Online

This was controversial after a video clip was released where Navjot Kaur Sidhu said that her treatment would cost her about ₹500 crore in her fight against cancer. The statements sparked a lot of unanimous scrutiny on the internet, with a lot of users doubting the authenticity of the figure and suggesting that such an amount would be costlier than the leading medical spending in the whole world in terms of cancer care.

The viral video was also analyzed by doctors and health experts, who described the numbers as biologically and economically unattainable and recommended that false information on such subjects might instill fear in cancer patients.

Political Undertones

Though no political differences are evident between the two Congress leaders, Shivakumar’s response is unusually sharp, indicating an increasing sensitivity within the party to controversial statements, particularly on healthcare or personal matters.

Analysts argue that Shivakumar’s reaction was the worry of the Congress leadership on the statements that may be used by the political opponents to undermine the credibility of the party or accuse the leaders of exaggeration and misinformation.

Previous Controversies

Navjot Kaur Sidhu, the former MLA and a doctor, has made her stinging remarks in political campaigns and during debates on women’s health issues. She came back into the limelight when she addressed people about her struggle with cancer.

Navjot Singh Sidhu has not spoken up on the recent comments.

It is not the first time Shivakumar has assumed a strident position in open discussions. Recently marked by his aggressive political approach, the Karnataka leader has previously fought against representatives of opposition parties, as well as the allies of the Congress, over the issue of rule and communication with the population.

Netizens React Sharply

There was a mixed reaction on social media websites. Some of the users condemned Shivakumar on allegations of being insensitive towards a cancer survivor. Still, some people also doubted the truth of the claims made by Navjot Kaur and encouraged the Karnataka leader to speak up against an overstated statement.

The case also brought back the debate about the affordability of cancer treatment in Indian hospitals ,with most of the users giving accounts of their personal experience of the cost of getting a treatment and questioning the healthcare insurance systems of the country.
