Aswathi Vaishnaw, the Union Minister of Railways, Information and Broadcasting, and Electronics and Information Technology, announced in a historic announcement to start the New Year that India is about to unveil the first-ever Vande Bhart Sleeper Train. The train will have a route between Guwahati in Assam and Howrah in West Bengal, as it is historic in modernizing the Indian Railways.
The minister said that the sleeper version of the Vande Bharat trains has been successfully trialed, tested, and certified. This made it one of the most anticipated railway launches of next year, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi officially flagging off the service in January 2026. Depending on the name of the development as an important milestone to Indian Railways and its passengers nationwide, Vaishnaw stated that 2026 would mark a year of serious reform and passenger-oriented efforts.
New Age of Overnight Train Travel
Vande Bharat Sleeper Train is introduced to revolutionize the way people travel overnight in India, the merger of high-speed technology and luxury comfort is the goal of the Sleeper Train. The train consists of 16 coaches, and it was constructed using local expertise and includes:
- 11 AC Three-Tier Coaches
- 4 AC Two-Tier Coaches
- 1 First-Class AC Coach
The combined capacity of these will be approximately 823 passengers.
Some of the major districts that the service will serve are Kamrup Metropolitan and Bongaigaon in Assam, Coochbehar, Jalpaiguri, Maldah, Murshidabad, Purba Bardhaman, Hooghly, and Howrah in West Bengal. The schedule is expected to be designed to facilitate convenient overnight travel, with departures in the evening and arrivals early in the morning at their destinations.
New Excellence in Engineering and Design
Minister Vaishnaw pointed out that the Sleeper Vande Bharat has a newly designed bogie that has advanced suspension technology and is more stable, safer, and comfortable to ride. Design architecture has been raised by a notch higher with attention to finer details to offer convenience to the passengers.
An ergonomic approach has been used in the construction of the interiors to improve comfort, as shown by the improved design of the berths, enhanced cushioning, user-friendly ladders, and the maximum utilization of space. The train has automatic sliding doors, seamless coach-to-coach connections via the vestibules, and enhanced speed performance, which is capable of up to 180kmph speed, enhancing India’s technological development in rail infrastructure.
Luxury Meets Safety
The project has safety as a major focus. The Vande Bharat Sleeper Train will also have a local version of the anticollision safety system in India known as KAVACH, which helps to increase the safety of the operation. Also, the train will consist of:
- Noise-cancelling technology of high quality.
- Advanced braking systems
- Fire detection and suppression in lavatories and electrical cabinets through aerosol.
The talk-back units were there before, but now passengers can communicate directly with the Train Manager or Loco Pilot.
- CCTV cameras in all coaches
- Special amenities for Divyangjan passengers.

The train is also built with a high level of sanitation, using disinfectant systems to ensure hygiene standards are met; something that Indian Railways has been keen on in recent years.
