India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met with Ecuador’s Foreign Minister Gabriela Sommerfeld Rosero on Wednesday. They talked about ways to improve their relationship in many areas, such as trade, health, agriculture, and digital growth.
In a post on X, Jaishankar said that both sides looked for ways to get more involved in building up others’ skills and agreed to work together closely in international settings.
He also praised Ecuador’s choice to start the process of joining the International Big Cat Alliance and the International Solar Alliance, which is run by India. He saw this as a good step toward better cooperation.
A deal on funds for Quick Impact Projects
Jaishankar said that a deal on funds for Quick Impact Projects would make the two countries’ development work even better together. The goals of these projects are to improve India’s development relationship with Ecuador and give real benefits to the communities they touch.
Piyush Goyal, the minister of commerce and industry, also talked with Sommerfeld and stressed how important it was to strengthen business ties.

Getting more involved
The new meetings build on official talks that have been going on between the two countries recently. Minister of State for External Affairs Pabitra Margherita went to Ecuador in November of last year and met with Sommerfeld to talk about ways to improve cooperation in a number of important areas.
It was during that time that both countries signed a Memorandum of Understanding for their foreign training schools to work together. The goal was to improve institutional ties and build competence. Other things that were talked about were getting involved in politics, trade, drugs, and training.
Recent events show that ties between India and Ecuador are getting stronger. Both countries want to work together more in new areas.

India continues to reach out to more people in Latin America
As India continues to reach out to more people in Latin America, relationships like these will likely be very important for achieving its economic and military goals.
Summerfeld, who is also Ecuador’s Minister of Human Mobility, is going to Rajghat to honor Mahatma Gandhi. In the evening, he will meet with JP Nadda, who is Minister of Health and Family Welfare, Piyush Goyal, who is Minister of Commerce and Industry, and Pabitra Margherita, who is Minister of State for External Affairs.
In November of last year, Margherita went to Ecuador on a formal trip and met with President Daniel Noboa Azin. They talked about ways to improve and expand their work with each other.
During his trip, MoS Margherita also met with Ecuadorian ministers, vice ministers, and officials to talk about ways to improve cooperation between India and the South American country in areas like agriculture, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, training, education, culture, tourism, trade, textiles, health, and pharmaceuticals.
There was also a meeting between the MoS and Sommerfeld, and the two ministers signed an agreement for the foreign training schools of India and Ecuador to work together. Margherita and Sommerfeld opened the resident Embassy of India in Quito together, underscoring India’s commitment to strengthening its relationship with Ecuador.
MOS Margherita met with Fernando Bucheli Vargas, who is Ecuador’s ambassador to India, in New Delhi in December. They talked about ways that the two countries can improve their relationships and work together on issues that are important to both of them. In 1969, India and Ecuador made formal links. A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between the two countries in 2000 so that they could hold Foreign Office Consultations.
As of now, the MEA says that there have been five rounds of Foreign Office Consultations between the two countries. These were in 2005, 2008, 2011, 2014, and 2023.
