A crude bomb blast in the center of Dhaka resulted in the death of at least one young man Wednesday evening as Bangladesh continues to experience growing violence. Confirmed by police and eyewitnesses, the blast took place in the Moghbazar region, a bust portion of Dhaka, after unknown assailants tossed an IED from a flyover that came crashing down on a passerby. Suffering severe injuries due to the blast, Siam, a 21-year-old youth, died on impact. His family has been able to identify his dead body.

The event occurred around the vicinity of the Freedom Fighters’ Memorial at Moghbazar, a place where citizens often congregate, and immediately spread fear among the locals and passersby. Reports came out that the police and other relief organizations immediately went to the place to cordon it off and initiate an investigation, though little is known about the culprits and their reasons behind the blast.
Context of Unrest:
This is part of an increasing trend of bomb attacks using crude explosives in the city of Dhaka. Similar incidents involving cocktail bomb blasts in various parts of Dhaka have been reported in independent news media in Bangladesh. Not all of them have ended in casualties. Law enforcement agencies usually investigate such incidents to catch the perpetrators through scanning CCTV footage and forensic analysis.
These occasional outbreaks take place in the wake of various levels of political instability being witnessed in Bangladesh. In recent times, the capital city of Bangladesh has witnessed various protests, counter-protests, and violent incidents in connection with political rivalry, among other issues. This includes tension arising from the expected return of opposition leader Tarique Rahman, among others.

Reactions from Political Actors:
The attack has been disapproved of by senior political circles. The Ameer (Leader) of the Jamaat-e-Islami political party has strongly disapproved of the “crude bomb explosion.” The Ameer, named Shafiqur Rahman, has expressed his “deepest condolences” to the loved ones of the man who lost his life in the attack. The Ameer strongly condemned the attack as follows: “This crude bomb explosion has resulted in the sacrifice of one of our sons. The government should take effective steps so that activities of these sinister groups are eradicated so that the country remains stable. Otherwise,
Security and Government Response:
The local police have promised to aggressively follow up on their investigation, which includes scanning security footage and working with forensic analysts. The blast has led to an increased security presence in the city of Dhaka, especially in sensitive public places, as evening attacks of this kind had occurred in the past. An official claim of responsibility has yet to be offered by the authorities.
Impact on Civilians:
The blast has affected the residents of a city that was already living with a high level of tension. The blast was reportedly loud and confusing, with the rescue teams struggling to cope with both scared and injured civilians. Most residents of Dhaka have expressed worries concerning safety, especially given that some previous blasts had occurred during daylight hours with no direct responsibility.
Wider Implications:
Experts predict that the impact of these incidents may weaken people’s confidence in their security and discourage people from doing economic business in the centers of the concerned cities. At this stage, the provisional government and the police in Bangladesh are coming under increasing pressure to regain stability and assure people of their protection.
