In a statement released on Friday, the federal government revealed that it had managed to foil an ISIS-inspired terrorism attempt and had arrested an 18-year-old suspect from Mint Hill, North Carolina, ahead of the New Year celebrations. A suspect named Christian Sturdivant, age 18, has been indicted on charges of attempting to provide material support to a terrorist organization.

As stated by the U.S. Department of Justice, “The criminal complaint in this matter was filed under seal on Dec. 31, 2025, pending the initial appearance of the defendant, Sturdivant, in federal court, which occurred in Charlotte.”

“This operation,” said Florida Attorney General Pamela Bondi, “was a huge success at bringing our federal and local law enforcement agencies together to prevent what would have been a disastrous terrorist attack before it occurred.” The message these agents are sending to those who might be supporting a group such as “ISIS” is this: “They will be held accountable.” This view was further reiterated by the Director ofthe FBI, Kash Patel.

Alleged Plans of the Suspect: Knives, Hammers, & Mass

Based on the criminal complaint filed against Sturdivant, it was established that he planned a violent attack owing to his belief in the ISIS group inside Iraq and al-Sham, which was carried out using knives and hammers in the grocery store and fast food outlet business in Mint Hill on New Year’s Eve. Based on the search conducted inside his residential premises on the 29th of December, two butcher knives and two hammers were found hidden under his bed, which matched the photos he uploaded on the internet.

He also collected tactical gloves, a vest, and a paper tagged ‘New Years Attack 2026,’ which included a plan to assault a maximum of 20 civilians and later respond to the police, which he referred to as a ‘martyrdom op.’ Department of Justice The aforementioned “notes” contained plenty of messages of extremism, along with a certain threat of harming some hundreds of persons, thus corroborating the prosecution regarding this matter as a carefully planned crime involving a large number of victims.

Cyber Radicalization & Undercover Operations

They found that Sturdivant’s process of being a radical was linked to his online internet activities. The law enforcement agencies were able to identify Sturdivant’s process for being a radical from his online internet activities. The FBI, in fact, began its surveillance on Sturdivant in mid-December, realizing that he was posting several messages on social sites such as

Nevertheless, this was not the only communication Sturdivant was involved in. There was yet another form of communication Sturdivant participated in with an undercover agent, who he suspected to be an ISIS operative. There was also communication between Sturdivant and an FBI’s undercover agent as well as a police agent for the New York Police Department, despite the fact that Sturdivant did not know the two men to be law enforcers. In the communication, Sturdivant swore allegiance to ISIS as expressed in the following statement: “I’ll be doing jihad soon.” According to reports, he was given real-time information on what he intended to do and his plans. Consequently, they acted before any event occurred.

Prior Contact with the FBI and Patterns of Behavior

According to federal authorities, it was not until 2022 that Sturdivant was first known to be involved with the concern of the FBI as a minor. He apparently had contacted someone he believed to be a representative of ISIS in a foreign country in regard to this matter, making statements of a perceived supportive nature toward terrorism, yet had treatment given without charge.

Previous incidents did raise some questions about his mental health issues and violent propensities, but the case that actually came into light was about what he had done recently and what he had planned to perpetrate an actual attack.

Legal Consequences and Community Response Presently, Sturdivant is housed in federal prison while he awaits his court date, scheduled for January 7. According to terrorism laws in the U.S., upon conviction, he is facing a sentence of as many as 20 years in federal prison. In a released statement, U.S. Attorney Russ Ferguson made it known that as much as protection of the general public was never in jeopardy, the fact that planning was done and firearms were in possession are a sure sign of how serious that threat was!

The thwarted attack brought a sigh of relief among the local population, but the concern about lone wolf radicalization and self-radicalized individuals remained there.
